We are in a climate and ecological emergency!
Today I photographed & participated in civil disobedience with Extinction Rebellion Boston & Red Rebel Brigade. Extinction Rebellion is a politically non-partisan international movement that uses non-violent direct action to persuade governments to act justly on the Climate and Ecological Emergency. Today's action was a die in. WHAT IS A DIE-IN? A Die-In is a form of protest in which participants occupy a public space, often obstructing the flow of traffic, and simulate being dead. The Climate Crisis is already claiming more than 5 million human lives each year. Extinction Rebellion Die-Ins help to illustrate that reality for the public, while raising awareness about Extinction Rebellion's efforts. We died on the floor in the middle of South Station in Boston, and then from there marched to die on the floors of financial institutions responsible for funding fossil fuels & climate destruction, like Bank of America & JP Morgan Chase Bank. We ended at Park St MBTA station on Tremont St for our final die in of the evening.
Red Rebel Brigade is an international performance artivist troupe dedicated to illuminating the global environmental crisis and supporting groups and organizations fighting to save humanity and all species from mass extinction. Red Rebels symbolize the common blood we share with all species, that unifies us and makes us one. At each location, Extinction Rebellion rebels lied down on the floor or ground as if dead. Some held signs with messages of climate crisis, others held Extinction Rebellion's flag bearing its hourglass symbol. Red rebels mourned in silence over the dead, expressing emotions through the body in a slow, fluid like motion.
I met some wonderful people & had fun doing this. This is the 7th action I've participated in with Extinction Rebellion since 2018, and it will not be the last.
The climate crisis is the greatest threat to our planet and the world MUST come together to end the use of fossil fuels to curb global warming before it's too late. We are in the midst of the beginning of a mass extinction of all life on earth.
